“War – huh! What is it good for? Absolutely NOTHIN’!”
Wait, hold on a second – that’s not exactly true.
Yes, wars can be quite violent – even deadly – but is war really good for absolutely NOTHING?
Sorry, popular song, but that statement is just not true. War, like all things that are allegedly “evil,” does have some good things about it:
1. IT PROVIDES JOBS DIRECTLY
Sorry to say it people, but if wars weren’t always going on in some part of the world, there would really be no need for soldiers. Consequently, a HUGE majority of the population that makes their living being in the military services would be without jobs.
2. IT PROVIDES JOBS INDIRECTLY BY CREATING NEW INDUSTRIES
Because of wars, there are companies out there specifically designed and created to create various items for soldiers to use during combat. Tanks, missiles, guns, advanced planes & radar equipment – all of these items have to be created by PEOPLE who, in turn, get PAID for their work.
3. IT ALLOWS COUNTRIES TO OBTAIN ITEMS THEY WOULDN’T OTHERWISE BE ABLE TO GET
Yes, it sucks when we hear things like “the U.S. is just fighting over in (insert name of country) to get (insert name of product: oil, food goods, etc.).” But sometimes another country has a valuable resource that can be helpful and useful by the rest of mankind, yet they just don’t want to share it. You can boo-hoo about war all you want, but can you think of any other way we would have initially been able to get oil/gas without it, especially when it’s in a region of the world that hates our guts?
4. IT HELPS TO GET RID OF EVIL DICTATORS
We went to war with Iraq under false pretenses after 9-11 which, admittedly, sucks. But it DID help us to rid the world of Sadaam Hussein, one of the most vile and ruthless leaders known to man. Who knows how many more people he would have tortured had we not gotten rid of him?
5. WE GET HOLIDAYS OUT OF IT
This last one may sound selfish, but without War there’d be no Veterens’ Day and no Memorial Day – two days out the year where we either get a four-day holiday or a kick-ass clothing sale. I’m not saying I’d rather there be fighting than these two things, but since there IS such a thing as war, it’s nice to get a little something back home out of it.
The bottom line is, not ALL the results of war are bad. I’ve had grandfathers, cousins, aunts, uncles and even my own Dad serve in the military. All of them served honorably and felt a duty to help the U.S. defend itself against other countries. So, while it would be ideal to say “war is bad!” and “we should have nothing but peace!,” the reality is that, as long as people are able to get jealous of other people/countries/entities, there will always be war. The very least we could do, then, is be thankful for some of the positive benefits it brings about.
Ah, war… now THAT’S something to be thankful for!
